The Kivu Lake Adventure Tour is a 2-day escape from Kigali to the shores of Lake Kivu, western Rwanda’s scenic lake. The drive from Kigali goes to Gisenyi (now Rubavu), and similar tours include the Nyamyumba hot springs, the town market and boat rides to Amahoro or Napoleon Islands. Kayaking is a relaxing way to take in the lake’s mountain backdrop, and the water is safe for paddling because it has no crocodiles or hippos. The tour suits travelers who want a short, active break with lake views and a night by the water. It can be done solo, since the minimum group size is 1.
Kayaking on Lake Kivu. One comparable tour has a three-hour paddle along the shoreline, starting around 2:30pm.
Safe, calm water. Lake Kivu has no crocodiles or hippos, so it is one of the safest places in Africa for water sports.
Island visits. Paddlers can explore islands like Napoleon and Amahoro, watch the birdlife and see the local coffee industry.
Gisenyi (Rubavu) town. Typical stops are the Nyamyumba hot spring and the Gisenyi market.

Cultural stop (optional). One itinerary returns via the Mashyiga Holy Rocks in the southern province, about a 3 hour 45 minute drive.
